Economic U-Turn
New Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced today that almost all of the economic policies outline in last month’s mini-budget would be reversed and overturned. The main points are that the proposed income tax cut is now cancelled, and the basic rate will stay at 20% indefinitely. Additionally the government’s Energy Price Guarantee will now only last six months, instead of two years, although this will be reviewed in April.
Countries withdraw from Eurovision
Both North Macedonia and Montenegro have pulled out of the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool in 2023. This is because of how much it’ll cost the country’s to enter the competition. While broadcasters have to pay to take part in the competition, the size of the fee varies depending on the population of the country.
Netflix defends The Crown
Netflix has defended its hit show The Crown as a “fictional dramatisation” after it came in for criticism from Sir John Major. The ex-Prime Minister told The Mail on Sunday that the show was “a barrel-load of malicious nonsense.” He was referring to a scene which allegedly shows a plan to dethrone Queen Elizabeth II.
Footballer Mason Greenwood remanded into custody
Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been taken into custody following his appearance in court charged with attempted rape. He is also charged with controlling, coercive behavior and assault. Greenwood was arrested in January and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth. His next appearance in court is scheduled for 21 November.
