The former Chancellor is now the third Prime Minister in 2022, but who is he?
Born in Southampton in 1980, Rishi Sunak’s parents were Indian migrants, making him the first British Asian Prime Minister.
He attended the exclusive private school Winchester College, and then went to Oxford University.
He met his wife Akshata Murty, who comes from a very wealthy family, while studying in America at Stanford University. The couple have two daughters.
Mr Sunak was elected as MP for Richmond in South Yorkshire back in 2015 before making a sharp rise through the political ranks.
He was made Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2020, which is the person who looks after the country’s money.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he laid out plans to support everyone who could not work, and started the ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ scheme, which gave people discounts at restaurants after the first lockdown.
The new Prime Minister was fined during the ‘Partygate’ scandal, when it was revealed he had attended one of the Downing Street lockdown parties.
He is thought to be one of the richest MPs, and one of the richest people in the UK, alongside his wife.
Their combined wealth places them at 222nd on the Sunday Times Rich List 2022.
He resigned as Chancellor in July of this year, which contributed to the downfall of Boris Johnson.
Mr Sunak then ran to replace Mr Johnson but lost to Liz Truss in this summer’s leadership race
But Ms Truss resigned after only 45 days in office, which meant Mr Sunak could run again.
Elected by support from the Conservative party MPs, Mr Sunak has become the 57th Prime Minister and the youngest in 200 years.
When ending his speech outside No.10 Downing Street today, he said: ” Together we can achieve incredible things”.
