Elon Musk put out a lengthy Twitter post citing his reasons for buying the social media giant. He said: “The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilisation to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner… That is why I bought Twitter. I didn’t do it because it would be easy. I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love.” The billionaire must complete the $44bn takeover before the weekend, or risk going to trial.

Adele announces she’ll study for an English Literature degree

During a Q&A with her fans in Las Vegas, the artist revealed: “After Vegas I want to get a degree in English Literature. If I hadn’t made it singing, I think I would be an English Lit teacher. That’s my plan for 2025, just to get the qualification.” The 34-year-old’s Las Vegas shows begin next month.

PM will not attend climate conference in Egypt

No. 10 have confirmed Rishi Sunak will not attend the COP27 Climate Conference in Egypt next month, where his predecessor Liz Truss had been due to appear. Labour said this was a “massive failure of climate leadership.” A Downing Street spokeswoman said Mr Sunak had “other pressing domestic commitments including preparations for the autumn Budget.”

Pupils mustn’t face discrimination for afro hair

Under new guidelines by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, pupils that wear natural afro hairstyles will be protected by law against discrimination. Jackie Killeen, Chief Regulator at EHRC, said: “We want to put a stop to pupils being unfairly singled out for their appearance in schools. Every child deserves to be celebrated for who they are and to thrive in school without having to worry about changing their appearance.”
